What Is Dark Academia? A Guide to the Genre and Its Art

Dark academia started with books. Before it became an aesthetic on Tumblr, Instagram and TikTok, it was a kind of story: clever students, a closed world of learning, and an obsession which turns dangerous.

The Dark Academia Store sells art for readers of these stories. Here are the questions we hear most, and our answers.

What is dark academia?

Dark academia is a genre and an aesthetic built around the pursuit of knowledge, and what it costs. The stories take place in universities, boarding schools, theatre companies and secret societies. The characters love art, poetry and the classics. Somewhere along the way, love of learning turns into ambition, rivalry or worse.

The core themes repeat across the genre: beauty and decay, friendship and betrayal, privilege and guilt, myth and the occult.

Which books define dark academia?

The Secret History by Donna Tartt, published in 1992, is the book most readers point to as the starting point. A group of classics students at a Vermont college commit a murder, and the novel unpicks how.

Earlier novels laid the ground. The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde, from 1890, gave the genre its fascination with beauty and corruption.

The last decade brought a new wave:

❧ If We Were Villains by M. L. Rio, set among Shakespearean actors.
❧ Babel by R. F. Kuang, a story of translation, empire and Oxford.
❧ Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo, about Yale's secret societies and the dead.
❧ The Atlas Six by Olivie Blake, A Deadly Education by Naomi Novik
❧ The Will of the Many by James Islington, where academia meets magic.
❧ The Maidens by Alex Michaelides
❧  The Cloistes by Katy Hays, thrillers rooted in Greek tragedy and medieval tarot.
❧ Bunny by Mona Awad, a satire of a writing programme turned surreal.
❧ These Violent Delights by Micah Nemerever, an obsession between two students in 1970s Pittsburgh.

What does dark academia art look like?

Dark academia art comes from the same well as the books. The genre's characters quote Greek tragedy, Shakespeare, Keats and Tennyson. The art of dark academia is the art those writers inspired.

Pre Raphaelite painters turned Tennyson and Arthurian legend into paint. Romantic painters chased the sublime: fog, moonlight and solitude. Symbolists painted dreams and death. Vanitas painters placed skulls beside books as a reminder of mortality.

The palette runs dark and rich: deep greens, oxblood, charcoal and gold.
